Call 999 if palpitations come with:
- chest pain or tightness
- severe breathlessness
- fainting, or feeling you are about to faint
- signs of a stroke: face drooping, arm or leg weakness, slurred speech
- a very fast heartbeat that won't settle and you feel unwell
Call NHS 111 or your GP urgently if
- palpitations last a long time or keep coming back
- you have a known heart condition and your symptoms change
- palpitations started after a new medicine
Book a routine assessment if
- palpitations come and go but you feel otherwise well
- you want to find out the cause and how to manage it
Family history matters
If anyone in your family died suddenly and unexpectedly at a young age (under 40), or had an inherited heart condition, tell your doctor: this changes how palpitations should be investigated.
