Falling oestrogen levels affect the nerves that control heart rate, and palpitations often come with hot flushes, night sweats or poor sleep.
What they usually feel like
A sudden awareness of a fast or pounding heartbeat, often with a flush, lasting a few seconds to a few minutes.
Why it is still worth a check
The risk of atrial fibrillation and other rhythm problems rises with age. Palpitations that are irregular, last a long time, or come with breathlessness, dizziness or chest discomfort should not simply be put down to the menopause. A thyroid check is also worthwhile, as an overactive thyroid causes similar symptoms.
What helps
HRT often eases palpitations along with other menopausal symptoms; discuss it with your GP. Cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, regular exercise and good sleep habits also help.
Call 999 if palpitations come with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or nearly fainting. For urgent advice, call NHS 111.
