Atrial flutter is another type of abnormal heart rhythm that occurs due to a problem in the atria – the
upper chambers of the heart. This is characterized by a rapid, regular heartbeat that you can feel, of
around 150 beats per minute – due to the way electricity is conducted in the heart. There is an
abnormal electrical circuit causing a rapid heartbeat. Atrial flutter can cause the atria to contract in
an ineffective manner, which can also lead to pooling of blood & blood clot formation – this can lead
to a Stroke. The risk of a stroke depends on age, sex & other health issues. If risks elevated, blood
thinning tablets are indicated. Symptoms of atrial flutter may include palpitations, shortness of
breath, and light-headedness.
Treatment options include medications, cardioversion, and catheter ablation.
