These are abnormal heartbeats that occur in the upper chambers of the heart – the atria. This is
different to the sinus node – the normal pacemaker of the heart. This can cause the heart to beat too
fast, too slow, or irregularly. Atrial ectopics are usually not dangerous and do not lead to any
worrying heart issues, but if they occur frequently or associated with other heart problems, they
may require treatment. It can be caused by various factors including structural heart disease, salt &
mineral imbalances, or certain medications.
Management of atrial ectopics can include lifestyle changes such as avoiding caffeine and alcohol,
and medications to control the heart rate. In some cases, a procedure called an ablation may be
used to destroy the abnormal tissue that is causing the ectopic beat. It's important to consult with a
cardiologist for personalised treatment plan.
